 In a quiet yet meaningful update (and after a long pause from social media), Her Highness Sheikha Mahra bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has returned with a new name on Instagram – and it’s a subtle nod to her Greek name.

The daughter of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has continually been in touch with her mixed Emirati and Greek roots. And it seems her new Instagram name, “Xtianna,” pays homage to her birth name, Christina, a thoughtful nod to her Greek heritage through her mother, Zoe Grigorakos.

Taking to Instagram over the weekend, the sheikha made a soft return with a post highlighting her updated username to her 1.1 million followers in a black and white post.

With devoted fans and followers quick to notice the subtle change on the Instagram platform, many were left puzzled and continued to speculate about the next phase of the sheikh's life might be.

Others, however, commended her for reconnecting with her roots, seeing it as a personal tribute to her identity with many commenting their blessings and support.

Sheikha Mahra was born with a different name

The only child of Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and his wife, Zoe Grigorakos, Sheikha Mahra was born in 1994 and was named Christina. She has Greek ancestry from her mother and is a part of the AI Falasi house. Mahra is a graduate of the University of London with a degree in International Relations.

Whether through family photos or cultural celebrations, she always makes a way to pay homage to her multifaceted identity.

Last year, the Sheikha observed Greek Independence Day on March 25, taking the opportunity to pay homage to her Greek roots on her mother’s side and shared a picture of the flag being displayed on the tower with a blue heart.

Later in 2024, the Emirati princess shared a series of photos on social media as she met with Antonis Alexandris, the Greek ambassador based in Dubai.

Sheikha Mahra shares a strong familial bond with her Greek side from her mother’s ancestry. Always in her photos, the Dubai Sheikha constantly uploads moments with her mother, Zoe, as seen on her Instagram feed.

French Montana and Sheikha Mahra spotted walking arm-in-arm in Paris

Fanning the speculation, Sheikha Mahra went on Instagram to post a moving picture of two hands holding a lock with a heart emoji. The picture, which appeared to have been taken at the famous Pont des Arts or Love Lock Bridge, was widely seen as an implicit declaration of their love. Subsequent posts by the princess included the Eiffel Tower and a cosy dinner table, according to a magazine.

This is not the first time that the high-profile couple have been spotted together. Last year, Sheikha Mahra posted photos with French Montana at the Four Seasons Resort Nammos Dubai, which is a high-end resort, and they also were spotted having a desert outing where Mr Montana showed respect for local culture by dressing in traditional Emirati attire, the kandura and ghutra.

The princess’ recent outings come after a major personal growth. Sheikha Mahra was also married to Sheikh Mana Al Maktoum, another Dubai royal. Their marriage that began in April 2023 ended in July 2024 after the birth of their daughter. Sheikha Mahra made her divorce public on Instagram, stating it was due to infidelity and using the Islamic practice of triple talaq. In a very assertive action after the divorce, the princess introduced a line of perfumes called Divorce, a declaration of independence that made headlines internationally.

Although French Montana and Sheikha Mahra have not publicly confirmed their relationship, insiders say the two are actually a couple. Their more frequent and intimate public appearances continue to make headlines and gain attention around the globe.
